Separate colored from white clothing, and bleeding colors from non-bleeding ones. Sort according to type of fiber, as well, since this will require different washing methods.

Check garments and empty pocket contents. Torn clothing should be sewn before washing. Pre-soak white clothing in strong detergent or rub in bleaching solution to loosen up dirt and stains. Take care when handling bleach. They should always be diluted with water and not applied as concentrated.

Leave the clothes soaked overnight to maximize effect. Never bleach colored clothing. Take note of wash care labels that specify the type of washing, drying and pressing (or no pressing) required. Fabric conditioners may be applied in final rinsing to "relax" fibers, making clothes springy and soft, and to prolong their useful life.
